Caring, Friendly and Safe….

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I hope you and your family had a lovely weekend. By now the majority of families should have received their classroom newsletter from their child’s teacher. I want to acknowledge the efforts our staff take to keep parents and caregivers in the loop. Remember, as well as the weekly email from the principal, we post information on our website. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to keep  you informed on what’s happening at our school.

PAC meeting: This Thursday at 6 pm in the library we will be holding our first PAC meeting of the year. A number of items will  be shared and discussed including but not limited to: PAC elections, principal’s report, planning for the Potluck dinner and other events such as hot lunch and Scholastic Book Fair. We hope to see you there and babysitting is provided so you can bring your little ones.

Aboriginal Ancestry

Attached to this email is the district brochure “Does your child have aboriginal ancestry”.  We want to ensure that we as a school and school district understand who our children of aboriginal ancestry (Metis, Inuit, First Nations, non-status, status, on-reserve, off-reserve) so that we can provide services and programs. Please review the attached brochure and then fill out the attached form should your child be of aboriginal ancestry and return it to our office – to Ms. Plathan prior to September 30. Should you have any questions, please call or email me.

Scholastic Book Fair :   Is coming to our school next week! The fair will be held in the library from Tuesday September 27th through to Thursday September 29th.  The fair times are three times a day 8:30 to 9:00, noon to 12:40 and 3:00 to 3:30, with a special late fourth opening on Thursday evening September 29th from 6 to 7:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

Terry Fox Run September 30th At our last assembly our theme was unity and I cannot think  of any other Canadian who has united Canadians as much as Terry Fox. The run will take place between 2 – 3 and our goal is to raise at minimum of $450. Parent volunteers are needed so if you can help out please email Mme Charlene Verbeek.

Cross Country runs and practices – Cross Country practices are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at lunchtime, meeting initially in the gym, 12:05 – 12:30. The only meet scheduled thus far is September 29th at Lost Lake in Whistler. Mr. Parker is once again our sponsor teacher for Cross Country – thank you Mr. Parker!

Lunch Program: We wanted to make sure that all parents/caregivers were aware of the wonderful lunch program that we have at Squamish Elementary. Helping Hands makes fresh brown bag lunches daily for the school, and we have volunteers pick them up and hand them out at lunchtime. The lunch consists of a sandwich, piece of fruit, and a granola bar. The lunches are available for students who may need a lunch for a variety of reasons. If your child does not know where the lunch room is please have them ask their teacher. The lunch program is no questions asked, and no names have to be given. Please feel free to send your child down to check it out so they feel comfortable to come and grab a lunch if it is needed. A big thank you to our volunteers!

Lunch Schedule for Kindergarten students (this week):

Recess (outside play) :  10:15-10:30  (5 mins before bell rings to allow time to get K/1’s in before the general population goes out)

Lunch (outside play):    11:20 – 12:00  (again, a 5 min transition time)
